St John’s offers a varied high-quality extra-curricular program. Choral and instrumental ensembles cater for all ability levels. Extra-curricular programs are run by highly qualified music staff with the support of specialist visiting teachers.
Most students choose to specialise on an instrument or voice, undertaking private lessons, group classes or sectional tutorials. Lessons are available in:
Students perform regularly in assemblies, Showcase Concerts, and Twilight Concerts as well as yearly events such as Celebration of Learning, Carol Service and musical productions. Performance opportunities and making music for others are treated as integral aspects of student development and individual students are catered for at a level that is appropriate to their abilities and experience.
The St John’s Music program has very strong links with the wider musical community, including New England Conservatorium of Music (NECOM) and regularly participates in large scale, high profile performance projects. Recently, students have been involved in Opera Australia productions (The Magic Flute) and New England Sings!, one of Australia’s largest choral festivals.
Music scholarships are offered each year to students who demonstrate high achievement and commitment to individual lessons and ensemble work. Enquiries regarding scholarships can be made with the Director of Music.
